Why local hosting matters: speed, support hours and NZ time zone help
When you choose a web host, it's easy to compare price and storage and forget to ask where the company actually is. For a New Zealand business, that question matters more than most people expect.
Here's what you get with a local host, and what you might be missing with an overseas one.
1. Your website can load faster for your customers
Data travels fast, but not instantly. If your website is hosted in the US or Europe, every page request makes a long trip across the Pacific (or further) and back. That adds delay, and on a busy page with lots of images and scripts, those small delays add up.
Hosting in New Zealand keeps that trip short for the people most likely to visit your site: Kiwis. All of our shared hosting, control panel and email servers are in Auckland, New Zealand, so your site sits close to your customers.
To be fair, location isn't everything. A heavy site on a poorly set up server will still be slow, no matter where it lives. That's why our servers run LiteSpeed, a fast web server that works hand in hand with WordPress caching. But if your customers are mainly in NZ, local hosting gives you a head start on speed. (If your site is already slow, our guide on why your WordPress site might be slow is a good place to start.)
2. Speed affects more than patience
A slow website costs you in a few ways:
- Visitors leave. Most of us give up on a page that hasn't loaded within a few seconds.
- Fewer enquiries and sales. If people leave, they don't ring, book or buy.
- Search rankings. Google takes page speed into account, so a faster site gives you a better shot at showing up when locals search for what you do.
3. Support in your time zone
This is the one people only appreciate when they need it.
Your site goes down at 9.30 on a Tuesday morning. You email your host overseas, and it's the middle of the night where they are. Or you get a reply from someone who doesn't know what GST is, has never heard of a .co.nz domain, and sends you a link to a help article when you wanted a human.
With a local host, support works the same day you do. Our team is here in New Zealand, during NZ business hours, and you can reach us by phone, email or support ticket. When you say "the site's down and I've got a customer waiting", the person on the other end gets it.
Outside business hours, your site isn't left alone either. All our hosting has 24/7 automated monitoring with a proactive response, and you can check our public status page at any time.
4. Real people who understand NZ business
Local support goes beyond time zones. It means:
- Talking to someone who knows how .nz and .co.nz domains work
- Help from people who understand NZ email and internet providers, and the quirks that come with them
- Prices in NZ dollars, so there are no surprise currency conversions on your invoice
- Being able to pick up the phone and speak to someone in your own accent
There are no call centres here. When you ring us on +64 3 541 9468, you talk to a real person in New Zealand who explains things in plain English.
5. It's easier to deal with a business you can hold accountable
If something goes wrong, you want to know who's responsible and how to reach them. A local company operates under NZ law, has a local presence and has a reputation in the community to protect. That's a very different experience from lodging a ticket with a company you couldn't pick out on a map.
We're NZ owned and run, with an office at Unit 6B, 303 Blenheim Road, Christchurch. Your invoices, domains and support tickets all live in one place in our client area.
6. Your data stays close to home
If you hold customer details, such as names, emails, bookings or orders, you have responsibilities under the NZ Privacy Act 2020. Knowing where that data is stored, and who to ask about it, makes those responsibilities much simpler to meet.
With our shared hosting, your website, databases and email are stored on servers in Auckland. We spread other jobs, such as name servers, backups and management, across servers in Sydney, Singapore and Frankfurt, so a problem in one place doesn't take everything down with it.
Every hosting plan also includes:
- Daily backups kept for 30 days
- Firewalls, a web application firewall and malware scanning
- Free Let's Encrypt SSL certificates, installed and renewed automatically once switched on in the control panel
When overseas hosting might still make sense
We'd rather be upfront about this. If most of your visitors are overseas, such as an export business or an international online store, hosting closer to them might be the better call.
There's a middle ground too. A content delivery network (CDN) keeps copies of your site's images and files on servers around the world, so visitors get them from somewhere nearby. We offer optional QUIC.cloud or Cloudflare CDN, and we set it up for you. And if you're on our WP Cloud managed cloud servers, you can choose the server location that suits your audience.
We host customers in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the UK, the US, France, Italy and Germany, so we're used to helping businesses whose visitors are spread around the globe.
The short version
Local hosting means a faster site for Kiwi visitors, support during your working day, and a team that understands how NZ business works. For most small and medium NZ businesses, that's worth a lot more than saving a few dollars a month.
Our WP Optimised shared hosting starts from $295 a year, and our WP Cloud managed cloud servers start from $175 a month. If you're moving a WordPress site, we'll move it for you free when you buy a year's hosting, and give it a health check while we're at it.
