Why your own domain matters
A domain name is where your business identity on the web starts. With your own domain you get a web address and email addresses that all carry your brand. If your domain is mydomain.co.nz, your website can be www.mydomain.co.nz and your email bob@mydomain.co.nz or sales@mydomain.co.nz.
It makes your brand look the part, makes you more credible to customers, and helps people find you in search.
8 tips for choosing your domain
Your domain is a big decision, and it gets expensive to change once it's on your signage and business cards. These will help.
1. Keep it simple
Long, complicated names get mistyped. Short and simple is easier to remember.
2. Make it memorable
There are millions of domains out there. Pick something catchy, and test it on a few friends.
3. Make it unique
Don't pick a plural, hyphenated or misspelt version of a well-known name. Flickr had to buy Flicker.com in the end.
4. Skip numbers and hyphens
Is it "5" or "five"? Where does the dash go? If you must use them, register the variations too.
5. Use keywords
Think about what people type into Google. A Nelson builder might pick nelsonbuilder.co.nz.
6. Say what you do
Choose a domain that clearly matches your brand or business, like bobthebuilder.co.nz.
7. Protect your brand
Register other extensions and common misspellings so nobody else can grab them. Point them all to one site.
8. Act fast
Take your time choosing, but once you've decided, register it. Good names go quickly, and they're cheap.
